New Sights and Smells Around and All Over Me

Big week this week was. Lots of firsts for both myself and the family. Speaking personally my first wasn’t as enjoyable as my parent’s first this week, but I have a feeling it’ll get better.

Enough with the drawn-out intro, I ate real food this week, if you don’t count the mashed up banana and apple I had been eating since last week. Mom made me a blended mix of fish, spinach and carrots which didn’t go down so well the first couple times but ended up getting to its destination by yesterday. Today was a different story though.

I don’t have a pic of the meal, but I do have various of the meal on me …

This should be my new Match.com profile pic. “Dirty toddler seeking pre-pubescent Miley Cyrus for innocent crib babble.”

Looked good though right?? Moms did a nice job on what actually did get inside me.

So, now for the next first. This will seem odd to essentially everyone living outside of Chile, but finding decent Chinese food in this city has been an on-going challenge turned annoyance for the padres. Even the up-scale spots will charge $15 for a plate of ramen noodles with chicken chunks marinated in jelly. A slap in face, from what I have been told.

Well, Pops had done some research online and found a little known place in a Santiago ghetto that some locals and U.S. expats down here had discovered. I’ll throw the name in here in the event it gets picked up in a web search – Xing Shun Restaurante in Santiago, Chile. The selling point was it was the spot all the Chinese chefs went to after they got off working at their crappy Chinese restaurants. That was enough for the parents.

The locale was a bit daunting so we decided to go during the day with my abuela Juani too. Upon entering we had a good feeling.

Typical Chinese layout from what I was told which was a good sign. We sat down and the waiter presented us with the menu for Chileans and the menu for Chinese. She indicated Chileans won’t really eat “real Chinese food” at which point we knew, the Chinese menu it is. Our first order was dim-sum.

The critical first bite. Of course I had none of this, basically living vicariously through the ‘rents and abuelita. According to their shrieks of “holy s*&%, we’re in the States again,” I took this to mean we had hit the mother load. Next stop, the main course(s) …

Speechless, and this is from someone who hates anything not liquid and white. Mom in a state of ectasy in this next shot …

Now, on to Pop’s and Abuelita Juani’s treats.

You can’t see it too well, but that is a whole fish, head and tail, steamed with vege’s and a sauce that would put Jaime Oliver out of business.

Meanwhile, I too got some love from my milk bottle resulting in a full out coma.

My Pops loves to pose next to me while I’m passed out. He said he used to do the same thing in college with his friends but said milk wasn’t part of the equation then.

After my nap the ‘rents had a little dessert …

And I did too if you know what I’m saying …

Just friends, not into older mamacitas.

All in all, success on all food fronts for the 3 of us. Stay breezy North American peeps … Mike
